Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer

What is Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Cancer?
Upper GI cancers include cancers of the oesophagus (food pipe) and stomach (gastric cancer). Stomach cancer (also known as gastric cancer) is a rare form of upper GI cancer, more common in older adults and occurring slightly more often in men than women. Surgery for these cancers can be complex, so treatment in specialist centres with experienced multidisciplinary teams (MDT) can improve outcomes. Learn more: Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer

The Upper Gastrointestinal Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) is a group of healthcare professionals who collaborate to provide comprehensive care for individuals diagnosed with upper gastrointestinal cancers, including stomach cancer, pancreatic cancer and bile duct cancer.

The MDT is chaired by Associate Professor Megan Barnet, a medical oncologist. It is attended by surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, gastroenterologists, pathologists, imaging specialists, dietitians, nurses and social workers. Meetings are held fortnightly.
